Things to Make Your Teeth Whiter

white teeth

It’s amazing what some people will smear on their teeth in their quest for a whiter smile. It’s become something of a fashion statement, a show of health and vitality, everyone is doing it.

The industry has been spurred on by internet celebrities like Kylie Jenner.

And along with kits and dental plans and special teeth whitening toothpaste has come some pretty bizarre suggestions too. Lets dive in and see what people are smearing on their teeth!

Strawberry’s

Apparently strawberries contain an acid which can make your teeth whiter. So next time you have to make the decision between profiteroles or strawberries and cream consider that!

You can make it into a smooth paste, or, like one pretty strange strawberry teeth whitening tutorial presents - just smear a strawberry all of over your teeth.

I don’t know about you but in this before and after it seems that her teeth actually got worse.  Not surprising considering the acid has been said to actually remove a layer of your teeths protection which makes you more susceptible to stains.

Activated Charcoal

Ya. Black is the new white.  Or at least pasting your teeth in black can now make your teeth whiter.  But before you head over to the fire pit to grab a chunk of charcoal, it needs to be activated to have the right properties.  This means it has been heated up to very high temperatures before it can be used.

So, how does it work?

The activated charcoal’s pores bind with rough parts on your teeth, usually surface stains and plaque, making it easier to remove the yellowing substances. Once the charcoal has been given enough time to stick to your teeth, it can be removed and when it is, the mineral takes the plaque, food particles, and surface stains with it.

Sounds good, but does it work?  Well, the evidence out their isn’t particularly strong - but worth a shot right?

Turmeric

Have you ever cooked with this spice?  If you have you will know that it literally stains everything it comes in contact with. So, it seems pretty odd that it is a widely suggested natural teeth whitener.

How does it work? Turmeric contains a component called curcumin which has some pretty great properties (none of them seem to be teeth whitening though).  It is an anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and antiseptic so for things like tooth ache it can be a great help.  However, in terms of whitening not so much.

However in some parts of the world the turmeric root is chewed to promote better oral health.

Banana Peel

Our final bizarre teeth whitening recommendation is banana peel. Not the banana itself, the white stuff inside the banana peel.  This white stuff contains the highest concentration of potassium which is the element which is said to whiten your teeth.   I can’t actually find any scientific evidence to say that potassium is a teeth whitener. Maybe the person who spread this tip around just though it sounded pretty scientific!

That’s all for today - some pretty crazy ways to whiten your teeth. Maybe we should just stick to the tried and proven methods?

We asked Tiger Smile Dental to comment, “There are some pretty outrageous claims about teeth whitening out there.   It doesn’t do anything for the Dentistry industry and stops some people from visiting the Dentist which of course is not ideal.  We would always say, for any treatment, medical or cosmetic head to a qualified dental practice.”
